SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES
Kedar Massenburg

Flashback. 1995. The music industry was flat. Carbon copy artists were churning out formulaic hits. Behind the scenes,
a visionary, a street-wise lawyer, Kedar Massenburg was orchestrating a movement. He signed two unknown acts, Erykah Badu and D'Angelo, to his new label Kedar
Entertainment. Neo-Soul was born and a new generation of fans were cultivated. He went on to blow up the industry with the rich and soulful music during
his tenure as the CEO of Motown Records, selling millions of records.
More than a decade and many hits later, Kedar is continuing to create a platform for timeless music, with soulful artists in a rapidly changing industry.
Situating the new era of Kedar Entertainment as the premiere independent R&B record label, also serving as a management company, which roster includes;
platinum selling artist Joe, Chico Debarge, Ginuwine and emerging artist Algebra. Kedar Entertainmnet most recent release Joe Thomas, New Man,
was the highest debut of an Independent on the charts. Most recently expanding his brand, Kedar has introduced K'orus, the first African American, French wine.
Raised in Flatbush, Brooklyn, Kedar has always worked hard to move beyond his modest family circumstance. After graduating from North Carolina Law School
in Chapel Hill, N.C., he worked at Pepsico Corp and SmithKline Beecham, quickly moving his way up the ranks. In 1991, he started a small entertainment
management business with just $1,700 and a big dream. He made a name for himself as a maverick, foot-to-the-ground promoter and talent manager. His hustle
and drive eventually took him to the top of the music industry as president and CEO of the legendary Motown Records. At Motown, Kedar worked with such
artists as Brian McKnight, Michael McDonald and BeBe Winans. His artists sold more than 65 million albums, helping the label break even after a decade of
losses, and won more that 20 awards, including six (6) Grammy Awards.
Kedar Massenburg, founded Kedar Beverages LLC in 2007, teamed with Jean-Sébastien Robicquet, a respected oenologist, master distiller and founder
of EuroWineGate, to create K'orus. Massenburg and Robicquet are recognized innovators in their respective industries, and K'orus is a revolutionary fusion
of their individual expertise and friendship. K'orus was conceived when Massenburg and Robicquet identified an enormous shortcoming in the wine industry --
they recognized that the industry was overlooking African-Americans, a powerful and trendsetting consumer group. K'orus combines the best of French wine
making with an upscale yet approachable American style. "I equate wine to music; when you do soul music or jazz, you try to pick your instrumentation in it.
Same thing with wine, in terms of flavor." Kedar explains.
Heralded as a savvy business man and master marketer, he has maintained integrity in the music he produces. A legend in his field he has appeared in major
media outlets; from the New York Post to CNBC, and graced the cover of the December 2008 issue of Black Enterprise as one of the "Most Intriguing People in
Business". This next chapter in Kedar Entertainment will be no less dynamic than Kedar Massenburg's trail-blazing past.

Isaac Slade

Isaac Slade had to laugh. Here he was, finishing up a piano part for the last song to be recorded for the Fray’s debut album,
How to Save a Life. And co- producer Aaron Johnson is asking him how the second record is coming?
"I laughed at him. He wasn’t laughing," Slade says. "I said, 'You've gotta be kidding, right?' He said, 'No, you've got to start writing for it.'"
Slade and his cohorts – guitarist and vocalist Joe King, drummer Ben Wysocki and guitarist Dave Welsh – got the hint.
"One of the first songs came six months after that," Slade says. "So it's been on our mind for a long time."
And what a time it's been for the Fray: The Denver-based group played to sold-out crowds around the world in support of 2005's
How to Save a Life (Epic/Sony), which went on to sell more than 3 million copies in the U.S. Melodically charged hits "Cable Car (Over My Head)"
and the title track worked their way onto the radio and into the hearts of fans – not to mention onto the soundtrack of TV phenom "Grey’s Anatomy."
Throw in a trio of Grammy nominations, and you've got the kind of out-of-the-gate explosion that any young artist would envy.
It's also the kind of success that can play some mind games, and all four musicians acknowledge experiencing moments of the unhealthy headiness of celebrity.
"It's a battle to go through any kind of fame or success – it's not good for a person," King says. "But we have people around us who really ground us.
Most of them, at some point or another in the last couple of years, would say, 'Dude, you're nothing special.'"
"We've tried really hard to get back to who we are and what we do," Wysocki says. "And that's pretty much friends making music."
With perspective regained, the friends didn't take themselves too seriously – but took their art very seriously –
when beginning work in earnest on the new record in the summer of 2007.
"A lot of people know us for two songs, and those are both extremes – way up and way down," says Slade, the Fray's lead singer and piano player.
He and King are the group's primary songwriters, and count those two hits among their compositions.
"This album has a lot more depth. To write those songs in the first place, we had to have a soberness or gravity to what we were writing,"
Slade says. "We wanted to make the songs count. I'm happy with this record because the songs feel like they count. They really connect to us."
Like the Fray's organic beginning in 2002, when onetime high school friends Slade and King bumped into each other at a guitar shop, the new album's
"You Found Me" begins quietly. Slade is at his piano, contemplating a soul lost and found. And like the band's rise in recent years, the song evolves from
something intimate into something huge, a haunting guitar-and-drum opus, with Slade's anguished singing making for an unshakeable experience. And that's just one track.
On "Absolute," Slade pushes his voice into new territory, exploring the upper register of his range. The pretty "Never Say Never" boasts a chugging momentum that
suggests it'll have a welcome home on the stage, where the group honed its chops over the past three years. The Fray even brought untested songs to the hometown
stage early in 2008 at Denver's Bluebird Theater, taking note of audience reaction before returning to studio work.
"With our first experience in the studio, recording 'How to Save a Life,' maybe we could hear something in our heads, but we didn't know how to
translate it onto the physical record," Welsh says. "Now, we're better musicians, and all of us are beginning to think outside the box. This time,
I branched out a little past guitar, whether it was synthesizer or other keyboard parts. I love to explore musically."
Reunited with producers Mike Flynn and Aaron Johnson, the bandmates began their explorations for the second album at a storied facility in Sausalito,
Calif., The Plant. But it was at a nondescript studio back home in the suburbs of Denver where they felt most comfortable, putting in workmanlike hours six
days a week to write and record the follow-up to their hugely successful debut.
There was no shortage of real-life experience to influence the storytelling, with the band amassing about 30 songs to choose from for the record.
"With success, you have a lot more drama," King says. "For me, it was extreme highs in career and extreme lows in a relationship. There were really
obvious things to write about."
"Three of us got married within the last three years," notes Welsh; King's marriage predates the band. "Trying to have these two things coexist – traveling
in a band for nine or 10 months out of the year, and having a wife at home who's trying to go about this other life she has – is fascinatingly difficult.
If you could put your finger on one thing that's been hard or a challenge, that would be it."
With its reference to "a sailor in a new port every night, "Absolute" could very well be inspired by the risk of long distance relationships and
life on the road. "Never Say Never" is even more direct, a love song between two people who are "pulling apart and coming together again and again."
"A lot of really big realizations about ourselves are on this record," King says. "We're singing about real things that we've experienced.
I'm not really comfortable talking about it, but I'm a lot more comfortable singing about it. It's a different side of me. The lyrics didn't come until the very end on a lot of the songs."
"The biggest goal we have is to be honest, at every point, with the music," Welsh says.
"There's a lot more questions than answers," Slade says. "But there are points of light throughout the record. I'm really proud of how we managed to capture extreme perspectives.
A lot of the lyrics are super intimate, about the interior of a relationship. And a lot are from the perspective of human struggle."
King says every track on the album was given long, thoughtful attention – one reason the album's creation took about a year.
"We've spent a lot of time on each song, and I hope that shows in the record, that it's all very balanced," he says. "The intimate songs are special – and the same
with the big, loud songs. If I'm a fan of a band, when I listen to a second record I look for the things that I immediately want to connect to – things I liked in their
music on the first album. Then I look for, have they changed in a good or bad way? Hopefully the fans will see that we've grown, that we’ve changed artistically
a little bit. And I would hope they would listen to it and say, 'They haven't become different guys.'"

Following his move to Atlanta in 1986, he started playing in local bands. Soon afterwards he produced his first Motown single "Mr. DJ" by former Klymaxx member

Since the late 80s, Austin has produced more than 50 hit singles which have debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 list with 17 songs spending numerous weeks in the
Top 10 list. He has had multiple Billboard number one's. Additionally, Austin’s work with TLC on the group's critically acclaimed "Fanmail" album resulted in
a Grammy for best R&B album at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards in 1999.
The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) honored him during its 3rd annual Heroes Awards. This award is the highest honor bestowed by an
Academy Chapter and is given to honor outstanding individuals and institutions in the Georgia region that have improved the environment for the creative community.

Austin began his foray into film and TV when he produced his first motion picture project Drumline in 2002, which was based on his own life experience in a high
school marching band. Following Drumline, Dallas co-produced ATL with Will Smith and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins (TLC). ATL was also based on Austin's own life experiences
growing up in Atlanta, Georgia. The film stars Big Boi of Outkast and Clifford "TI" Harris and Evan Naess.
As a result of his success, this multi-talented music and film producer is the creator and sole proprietor of a production company, a recording studio, a record
company, a film company, a merchandising and marketing company, three publishing companies, and a clothing line, The Rowdy Collection.
Even with his many ventures, Austin remains heavily involved in the Dallas Austin Foundation, which he created in 2003 to develop the talents and skill
set of urban youth by exposing them to various facets of the music and entertainment industries. Key initiatives of the foundation include a college scholarship
program, and the recently launched “Don’t Stop the Music” program, which was created to teach kids the ins and outs of the music business while providing an
alternative resource for music instruction during this period of decreasing arts funding in public schools.

Betty Wright

From singing gospel with the family group, the Echoes of Joy, Wright began switching to R&B music in 1965 when she was only eleven years old. In 1967, she discovered singers George and Gwen McCrae, and helped them sign to Henry Stone's Alston record label. In 1968, she released her first album, My First Time Around, at the age of 15, and scored her first hit single, "Girls Can't Do What Guys Can Do" on Alston, part of Stone's TK studio and record company in Florida.
In 1971 The song, "Clean Up Woman", became a major pop and R&B hit, remaining at #2 for eight weeks on the R&B chart and reaching #6 on the pop listing.
"Clean Up Woman" was written by Steve Alaimo and stayed for 14 weeks in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It sold over a million copies with the R.I.A.A. gold disc award on December 30, 1971 and would later influence a remix of Mary J. Blige's "Real Love" single with the sample of its guitar riffs; R&B girl trio SWV's "I'm So Into You" also featured a sample from "Clean Up Woman," as did Afrika Bambaataa's song "Zulu War Chant", and Sublime's "Get Out!" remix. Beyoncé has sampled "Girls Can't Do What The Guys Do" for her hit "Upgrade U".
In 1978, Wright scored with a re-worked live version of a song she had written with producer Willie Clarke, "Tonight is the Night" (about a real-life love affair that happened with Wright when she was a teenager). The original version had done reasonably well three years earlier but the new, much longer version climbed to #11 R&B. This was later sampled by both Candyman for his one-hit wonder "Knockin' Boots" and Sheek Louch's single, "Good Love" . Another single, "Where is the Love" which was written and Produced by Harry Wayne Casey aka (KC & The Sunshine Band), Richard Finch, Willie Clarke, and Betty Wright won her a Grammy for Best R&B Song in 1975. In late 1979, she appeared as a special guest on most Survival Tour concerts of reggae superstar Bob Marley.
After experiencing a brief slump in the early 1980s, she rebounded to set up her own record label, Ms. B Records, and in 1988 made music history by being the first woman to have a gold record on her own label, with the release of Mother Wit, which featured two of her biggest hits in years, "No Pain No Gain" and "After The Pain." On both songs, Wright displays her upper register capabilities and her ability to sing in the seventh octave. Wright also charted in a 1990 duet with Grayson Hugh on a remake of the 1981 Champaign hit "How 'Bout Us", and sang on fellow Miami vocalist Gloria Estefan's 1991 chart-topper "Coming Out of the Dark."
In 2006, Wright appeared on the TV show Making the Band as vocal coach appointed by Sean Combs, for new female group Danity Kane. She now mentors several young singers and has done vocal production for the likes of Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez and Joss Stone. Wright currently resides in her hometown of Miami.

Marcus Johnson

Renowned jazz keyboardist, composer and producer Marcus Johnson continues to stand strong with his latest CD
titled
Poetically Justified, released June 2, 2009 with a debut at #10 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts.
Poetically Justified marks Johnson's eleventh solo jazz record and is Johnson's most unique and multifaceted album to date. His experience and passion provide the
perfect platform for this newest musical masterpiece, best described as a combination of smooth urban jazz with a slice of funk.
Poetically Justified is introduced with musical force in the funky opener "Chillaxin" which emphatically sets the tone for this CD and follows with two in-the-pocket
jamming upbeat tracks -- "Capice" lead by the signature voice of hit R&B vocalist Miles Jaye, and "I See You" featuring Grammy winner jazz saxophonist Najee.
"Master of My Heart" is lead by the sultry vocal stylings of Incognito's Maysa, and is a beautiful romantic ballad co- produced by Johnson and Robbie McDonald.
This song is currently in heavy rotation on adult contemporary radio WHUR in Washington, DC. These four songs set us up for an explosive journey that continues with
some great original tracks – Danni's Song; the bouncy staccato horn driven Ellicott City; the beautifully produced and performed "Cherish the Journey" and Maysa's
upeat performance on "Hold On". Johnson's admirers will adore the snazzy cover of John Legend's smash hit "Used to Love You" and his funky cover of Michael Jackson's hit
"This Place Hotel", the lead single for smooth jazz radio and Floetry's "Say Yes". Miles Jaye returns to the listener in the album's closing number, with the top
Billboard single, "Heaven" from Jaye's acclaimed record,
Irresistible.
Prior to the release of
Poetically Justified Johnson's most recent project was the groundbreaking Billboard Top 15 Contemporary Jazz FLO series. The series consisted of
three distinct albums released simultaneously in September 2008, –
FLO: Chill (#7),
FLO: Romance, (#7) and
FLO: Standards (#2). Johnson's previous 2007 solo
release,
The Phoenix, was widely lauded by jazz critics and aficionados alike. Just as with Johnson's 10 previous albums,
The Phoenix peaked at #6 on Billboard's
Contemporary Jazz charts.
Johnson's educational background compliments his career success story as both an artist and entrepreneur. While pursuing both a JD and MBA at Georgetown University, Johnson
independently produced and distributed his first album in 1997,
Lessons in Love. The album went on to sell 40,000 units – unprecedented for an unknown artist's debut
release.
Lessons in Love helped Johnson launch his career as a jazz musician and the CEO of Marimelj Entertainment Group LLC (MEG).
During the next decade, Johnson would release several critically-acclaimed albums:
Inter Alia, Chocolate City Groovin', Coming Back Around, Urban Groove, In Person: Live@ Blues
Alley; Just Doing What I Do, Smooth Jazz Christmas, and In Concert For a Cause, all of which charted at Top 20 or more on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz Charts.
Over the course of his career, Johnson has shared the stage with many music legends including BB King, Boney James, Kim Waters, Peabo Bryson, Dr. Billy Taylor, Diana Krall,
Erykah Badu, Peter White, Miles Jaye, Rick Braun, Norman Brown, Chaka Khan, Arturo Sandoval, Chuck Mangione, Marion Meadows, Rachelle Ferrell, Mike Phillips, George Duke and
Jeffrey Osborne. Having performed at many of the world's most famous festivals and venues, Johnson's resume boasts appearances at The Capital Jazz Fest, Bermuda Jazz Fest,
Trenton Jazz Festival, Philadelphia's Dell East, Atlantic Artscape, Huntington Beach Jazz Fest, The National Smooth Jazz Awards and the John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts to name a few.
Marcus Johnson intends to bring his love of jazz to the masses, a challenge others might see as too daunting. His ambition, ideas and love of music are the rock on
which he stands, raising the art of jazz to the upper echelon of the music industry. Poetically Justified is a brilliant compilation of contemporary smooth jazz with a
definitive urban groove, a work of mastery from one of the Jazz world's greatest.

Jesse Stoll

Over the years, Jesse Stoll has racked in experience points within all facets of the entertainment industry. Before and throughout his college career at The University of Miami,
Stoll worked extensively as the college marketing representative of Miami for Sony BMG. He assisted and spearheaded on all ends the marketing efforts to push both the developing
and staple artists and bands within all genres of music. Artist rotation on a radio station, press interviews, live performances and street teaming were all integral components to
Stoll’s position at Sony BMG. This very college marketing department served as a springboard for diverse bands
over the year including The Fray, Kings of Leon, Lamb of God, Matisyahu, Manchester Orchestra and Flyleaf.
Before graduating with a Bachelor’s in Business Management with an assisting minor in Music Business, Stoll managed to squeeze in a stint managing a developing alternative/pop rock
band based in South Florida. Big Bang Radio became one of the hottest pop/alternative artists spanning radio stations and newspapers across the country. The band’s hit single "Radio" topped
the charts on internet pod casting stations across the world and became a favorite on indie/alternative stations on XM. Stoll spearheaded a marketing campaign which ultimately landed Big Bang
Radio on a national television show on Fuse TV competing for a one million dollar recording contract. Ousting out over 10,000 bands from across the nation, Big Bang Radio became one of the top
three finalists before being eliminated on one of the final episodes.
Perhaps Stoll’s strongest experiential point may be the touring aspect of the entertainment industry – For almost 22 full years, he shadowed behind his father Jon Stoll,
the famed concert promoter and entrepreneur who founded, owned and ran Fantasma Productions for over 30 years. One of the most respected and longest standing independent concert promoters in the world,
Fantasma reigned the concert world with countless shows over a three decade span including Bon Jovi, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, Britney Spears and tons more. It was the endless nights behind settling
a show and the magic behind pushing to sell each and every ticket in the house that Jesse Stoll watched and learn his father grace the concert scene. It wasn’t until Jon Stoll untimely death in
January of 2008 that Jesse decided to jump into the concert world.
Over the past year and a half, Jesse Stoll has worked for concert promoter AEG Live, the touring company who brings monster tours including Kiss, Justin Timberlake,
Tom Petty and Paul McCartney as well as revolutionary festivals including Coachella, The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Rothbury. As Operations Coordinator of AEG Live Southeast,
Stoll works along all former Fantasma employees behind an office spearheaded by former Fantasma vice president, John Valentino. As operations coordinator, Stoll spearheads exciting and creative
new concepts within the touring world including festivals, special events and venue expansion. Over the past year, Stoll has developed several festivals including a partnership with the famed country
festival Suwannee River Jam in Live Oak and the homegrown DubFest in Hollywood, FL. DubFest, held at ArtsPark in Young Circle this past Labor Day weekend in Hollywood, FL, featured several
of the biggest names in reggae and ska including Bunny Wailer, Lee “Scratch” Perry and Reel Big Fish. Stoll hopes to develop this festival into the trademark event of Florida and beyond.
Jesse Stoll continues to make his mark within the music business and entertainment scene as he follows closely in the footsteps and spirit of his father – The future brings
groundbreaking projects and events brought to you by the AEG Live team in the spirit of revolutionizing the music scene for the years to come.

Michael Sterling

What can you call someone who plays virtually every music instrument, composes, arranges, directs, sings and has been a skilled songwriter for years? Generic labels like impresario,
maestro, multi-talented or Renaissance man don’t seem to encompass the extraordinary gift of Michael Sterling’s musicianship.
So what you do when faced with this seeming inability to describe such a wondrous gift is delve deeper into who this artist is --knowing that if you experience his music
through his perception -- the words you seek will finally come.
Understanding Michael’s music requires you to know a bit of his background. A Miami native, his musical career started in his teens when he played bass for popular Latino recording
artist Ray Fernandez. Eager to branch out into another direction, Michael and two childhood friends formed the group Silver Platinum, who quickly scored
a hit on the R&B charts with their hit “Dance”.
Michael then went on to play bass guitar and sing as a member of the Grammy Award winning reggae band Inner Circle. Inner Circle is most known for their hit “Bad Boys” which is
used as the theme song for the Bad Boys film franchise that stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. It is also used as the theme song for hit television show COPS.
After touring the world with Inner Circle, Michael returned to Miami. While developing his career as a solo artist, Michael also spent time as an audio engineer and producer at
Luke Records, where he produced hits for local artists 2 Live Crew, MC Shy D, JT Money and others. He also served as musical director for BMG recording artist Blu Cantrell.
While assisting in the development of other artists’ careers, Michael continued to strengthen as a songwriter, and soon found many of his original compositions being covered by
some of the hottest artists out today. His song “Holiday” served as inspiration for the derivative Trick Daddy single “Thug Holiday”, which is also the title track of Trick’s Platinum album.
Then Lil' Jon and the East Side Boys, Usher and Ludacris covered his song “ Lovers and Friends” for their smash 2005 single of the same name. The song was released on the quadruple
platinum album “Crunk Juice” and was the winner of two BMI Billboard awards including ‘Hip Hop Song of the Year’. In 2006, his song “Bedroom Boom” was covered by The Ying Yang
Twins featuring Avant on the platinum Ying Yang CD “U.S.A”.
Michael continues to use his formidable talents as a music industry heavyweight. His charismatic and unique voice has been featured in performances on the
Today Show and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
It is no surprise that this industry leader has expanded his scope of entertainment interest to motion pictures. MSMG, The Michael Sterling Music Group in association with
Infinity Productions, will soon release the first of many movies entitled: ‘ALMOST RELATED’.
Shot primarily on location in Thailand, the movie score features just a few of the crème de la crème of MSMG’s impressive artist roster including, ‘Michael Sterling’ ‘Tessie’,
‘Supa’ and ‘Swindle’. Other talented artists that complete the MSMG roster are: ‘Faze’, ‘Brown Hill’, ‘Trudy’, ‘Strawberri’ and ‘Leah Mc Crae’.
Michael has just completed his new two volume Album, “Eyes Around My Heart”. The album, as well as the first single “Charming”, is a musical reminder of what true artistry is all about.
The smooth R&B and pop songs featured on the album have already garnered rave reviews and fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating its release.
And so we return to the question of what do you call a man whose gifts run the gamut from music to film to label executive and whose artistry as a musician covers the genres of pop,
reggae, hip hop and R&B? You call him what he is. A virtuoso -- a musical genius whose career will only continue to inspire and awe all those who have the unique privilege of consuming his music.

James Scheffer (aka Jim Jonsin) was unquestionably the most successful writer producer of 2008. Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for 13 weeks
(5 weeks for "Lollipop" and 8 weeks for "Whatever You Like"), Jonsin stayed in the top 5 chart positions for an astounding 24 weeks.
As if that weren't enough, Jim scored multiple Grammy nominations for these two songs and took home an award for Best Rap Song for "Lollipop" and a contributing award
for Rap Album of the Year, which was awarded to Lil Wayne's
The Carter III. Jonsin hasn't slowed down in 2009. He lit up the charts this summer with Pitbull's
Rebelution album, which he executive produced and Beyonce's "Sweet Dreams" single.
He also won numerous BMI Urban Awards in September, including the BMI Creative Inspiration Producer Award.
The value of doing honest business and working hard was learned by Jim at an early age, and the lesson has paid off. Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in South
Florida, Jim began his career in music as a scratch DJ. At only fourteen years old, he was spinning at local skating rinks around town and practicing his new skills.
By the time Jim was 18 years old, he teamed up with Mass Jam Productions and created the label Cut It Up Def Records. This is when the young entrepreneur began his

"Cut It Up Def," which sold 40,000 units independently.
Shortly after, he produced and rapped on his first regional hit song called "Party Time." The song landed Jim a recording deal from label Heat Wave Records/Selecto Hits.
Jim was now producing and rapping under the alias Jealous Jay and dropped a compilation album, "Cut It Up Def Miami Bass Jams." The album went gold and Jim headed on tour,
opening for artists such as Cypress Hill, Markie Mark & the Funky Bunch, Luke, and 2 Live Crew.
After years of production work, the musician created an independent label called Paper Chasers through Warner Brothers/Ruff Nation. He developed new talent and signed
artists, White Dog and Sons of Sacrifice. During 1998, Jim embraced the opportunity to work with Trick Daddy and Trina on Slip & Slide/Atlantic Records. Before
long, the producer began producing and developing the Miami-bred group of four brothers, Pretty Ricky.
In 2005, while a member of the production duo The Unusual Suspects, the hits began to roll in, including "Girl Tonite" (Twista), "Dammit Man" (Pitbull), "Let's Go"
(Trick Daddy), "Grind With Me" and "Your Body" (Pretty Ricky), "Showstopper" (Danity Kane) and "Unpredictable" (Jamie Foxx). In 2006, BMI named Jim Urban Songwriter

Kevin Cossom

With a voice that stirs the soul and boy-next-door charms, Kevin
Cossom is easily poised to be R&B's next breakout star. It also
doesn't hurt that he's the first artist signed to red-hot producer
Danja's N.A.R.S Records imprint either.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and raised in Orlando, Florida,
Kevin Cossom first found his love and talent for song in church.
Kevin's mother- an educator and founder of a performing arts academy-
was her son's first supporter, encouraging him to perform his first
solo at the tender age of three.
He later joined his first group, a
gospel act his mother assembled, at the age of six. However, the young
singer/songwriter didn't realize that he wanted to make music his life
until he was 14. Once the high school-aged Kevin met Rashad Tyler, his
manager, that's when things began to click for the young upstart.
It didn't take long for the hungry rookie to get put on. In 2004, he
was featured on his first song, Lloyd Bank's "Karma." Thanks to fellow
Orlando sons/producers The Runners, Kevin followed that up with his
first songwriting credit when he penned the R. Kelly hook on Young
Jeezy's "Go Getta." He has also featured on albums from Beanie Sigel,
Rick Ross, Chamillionaire, Trey Songz and Rocko, among others. "For
me, it was a way in… I thought that other songwriters didn't take me
seriously because I was just placing hip-hop hooks," says Kevin.
They're taking him serious now…in fact, it was those guest appearances
that scored Kevin an audience with super producer Danja (Britney
Spears, Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake). "I went to work with Danja
in Miami as a songwriter for a girl group he was working with," says
Kevin. "It was like instant chemistry. He asked me if I was just a
writer, and I told him no, it was just to pay the bills. Now, we're
finishing an album together." With the support of Danja, Kevin
describes his untitled debut as a direct reflection of who he is-part
urban, part suburban; part spiritual, part secular. "My music is
really eclectic. Not backpack or playing on the conga eclectic, but I
am inspired by anything that pushes the music to another level. It's a
bit unpredictable, but at the same time safe enough for you to
understand it so it's not so left. It feels good, its fresh but it's
reminiscent of something old."
In an age of reality stars and hardcore hip-hoppers, it's good to see
that there are some artists who are still doing this for the love of
the music. Whether it's his moving voice or his soulful songwriting,
Kevin's love and passion for the game is what will have his fans
wanting more.

Billy Cobham

Ever since his breakthrough in the early 1970s-as a founding member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and as a drummer/leader whose recordings (such as Spectrum) and powerful, complex style of play exerted a strong influence on the course of jazz and jazz-fusion-Billy Cobham has remained a tireless musical explorer.
Panamanian by birth, a New Yorker by upbringing, and a resident of Switzerland for more than 25 years, Cobham has pursued an ever-broadening, ever-deepening engagement with the world not only as a master drummer and percussionist but as a composer, producer, educator, and clinician who gives service through music even as he constantly expands his personal creative expression.
Cobham's newest recording, Fruit from the Loom-released in April 2008 through his own imprint, Creative MultiMedia Concepts, Inc. (CMMC)-is a suitably wide-ranging representation of his roots and his journeys. He reprises two of his best-known compositions from the '70s, "Spectrum" and "Crosswinds," by incorporating violin on the former and steel pan on the latter. "I've always found it difficult to focus upon one direction in music," Cobham notes, "so I've resigned myself to projecting ideas and thoughts through a musical kaleidoscope, from Latin to rock and jazz. This version of 'Spectrum' is a testament to that idea."
On the new CD, he also utilizes a string quartet (on "Faia") and percussion ensembles-with Cobham himself playing all the parts on "Samba du Militairestrasse" and Nigerian friends joining him on "Thoughts from Okuta." Experiences from travels in Brazil are captured in "Eggshells Still on My Head" and "Florianapolis," while the Bocas del Toro islands off the eastern coast of Panama-which Cobham describes as a place where "it is easy for me to relax and generally mellow out"-inspire the buoyant "Sweet Bocas."
Fruit from the Loom, dedicated to the memory of Cobham's parents William and Ivy, features support from longtime colleagues including organist Brian Auger, bassists Victor Bailey and Stefan Rademacher, saxophonist Ernie Watts, guitarists Dean Brown and Jean-Marie Ecay, and, on steel pan, Junior Gill.
Cobham is also the centerpiece of a new 90-minute documentary by director Mika Kaurismäki entitled Sonic Mirror. The genesis of the film dates back to 2001, when Kaurismäki approached the drummer about producing a portrait of his life and times. "But then we started to think of other ways of doing it," the director reveals. "We finally decided to do a film about Billy and some of his projects, focusing on rhythm and music as communication and universal language."
To Cobham, the term "sonic mirror" means "a sound reflection of everything that I experience, or that one experiences, in music. It's almost like a radio parabolic dish, where all of the radio signals come in, are processed, and reflected back to the presenter."
The film, which takes place in Switzerland, New York, Salvador da Bahia (Brazil), and Helsinki (Finland) and which was released in April 2007, has screened at film festivals in Munich and Cologne, Germany; Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil; Pusan, South Korea; Gijón, Spain; Adelaide, Australia; Guadalajara, Mexico; and Buenos Aires, Argentina. It's also had a commercial release in France. A multiple-disc DVD release is currently in the works, focusing on the concert in Finland with Randy Brecker; Malê Debalê, a Bahian bloco afro; the Glarus concert (with Swiss musicians and yodeling choir); Okuta Percussion and Autistics; and the Okuta Percussion concert.
The Hollywood Reporter described Sonic Mirror as "a feel-good world music documentary with the potential to be the next Buena Vista Social Club." But for Cobham, more fundamentally, "it verifies the value of music as an important factor in this world. If used for the greater good, it can be a powerful ally."
Billy Cobham was born in Colón, Panama on May 16, 1944. The family relocated to the U.S. in the winter of '47, living first in Harlem and then in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. "Music was all around me," he recalls. "Primarily either Latin music-folclórico or tìpico, as they called it in Panama-or jazz."
Cobham, whose first paying gig came at age eight, courtesy of his pianist father, cut his teeth on drumming as a member of St. Catherine's Queensmen, a drum and bugle corps in St. Albans, Queens. He went on to attend New York's famed High School of Music and Art, where he studied music theory and drum technique alongside some of today's great musical legends, including trumpeter Jimmy Owens, bassist Eddie Gomez, and pianist Larry Willis. At the time, "jazz was a bit off-limits to students while classical music was preferred by the education establishment. So of course students craved to connect with jazz artists in any way that they could, be it chance encounters at school lectures or via LP recordings that they could study and eventually emulate."
After military service, during which he played in the U.S. Army Band as percussionist (1965-68), Cobham began working in Horace Silver's band. (While on a European tour with Silver in 1968 he became one of the first percussionists, along with Max Roach and Tony Williams, to use the Electronic Drum Controller made by the Meazzi Drum Company in Milan.) He also performed with Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott, and recorded with George Benson.
In 1969 Cobham co-founded the fusion group Dreams, which also featured Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, John Abercrombie, Don Grolnick, Barry Rodgers, and Will Lee. The following year he was invited to join Miles Davis's group and contributed to four pivotal recordings by the trumpeter, including Bitches Brew (where he collaborated with guitarist John McLaughlin) and Tribute to Jack Johnson.
Mahavishnu Orchestra was formed by McLaughlin in 1971 with Cobham, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, and Rick Laird. They released three acclaimed albums (beginning with Inner Mounting Flame) before the band was dissolved and Cobham chose to launch his solo career with Spectrum, one of the definitive albums of the jazz-rock era.
During the 1970s and '80s, he recorded steadily as a leader for Atlantic, CBS, Elektra, and GRP, collaborating with artists ranging from George Duke, John Scofield, and Tony Williams to Jack Bruce and the Grateful Dead, both on stage and in the studio.
Cobham was engaged by UNICEF in 1992 to work with autistic outpatients and street children in Santos (near São Paulo), Brazil, in a musical project of several years' duration. "The street children fell into my realm of operations almost by chance, as it was not part of my original mandate," he says. "But due to the unavoidable specter and shadow cast by so many little personalities with big hearts and so much time to ponder life without parental direction, it was inevitable that I would find myself working with them-some of the brightest minds harboring raw talent that I have ever witnessed to date. The shame of it all was that many would never have the opportunity to use their gift."
In '93 Cobham performed, recorded, and produced at the WOMAD Festival (World of Music, Arts and Dance) with Peter Gabriel, Nigeria's Okuta Percussion, and Farafina from Burkina Faso. (His association with WOMAD continues to this day: over the last several years he's conducted sessions in performance techniques at the University of Bath Spa in England, and he is now an Official Patron of WOMAD in Bath.)
Other highlights of the 1990s included touring and recording with Jazz Is Dead, Paradox, Nordic, and the London Jazz Orchestra; and development of the Conundrum book series, whose titles have music-minus-one capability that allow participants to play along on their specific instruments. (Drum set, piano, brass, woodwinds, bass, and guitar books are available through Alfred Music Publications in association with Rhythmatix Music, Ltd.)
By the start of the '00s Cobham had introduced "The Art of Jazz" series, recording and touring extensively first with the Art of 3 (Kenny Barron, Ron Carter), then the Art of 4 (Carter, Donald Harrison, James Williams) and the Art of 5 (Harrison, Guy Barker, Eric Reed or Julian Joseph, Orlando Le Fleming). He also worked with Culture Mix (featuring steel pan player Junior Gill), recording two albums with them for CMMC (with distribution through In and Out Records), and in 2003 reactivated Spectrum as a band that revisits the music of that genre-reinventing album.
Cobham plans to record a second volume of Fruit from the Loom this summer, with Dean Brown, JM Ecay, Tom Coster, Cristophe Cravero, Victor Bailey, Ernie Watts, Mike Mainieri, Junior Gill, Michael Rodriguez, Mike Mondesir, Marco Lobo, Marshall Gilkes, and Philippe Chayeb among those who'll be on board.
His current collaboration with the Cuban group Asere has been ongoing since their first performance together at the WOMAD Festival in Reading in 2002. A new CD, De Cuba y de Panamá, is due for summer 2008 release, and a DVD, A Latin Soul, directed by John Hollis, is already out. That package contains live concert footage, two documentaries, and a bonus CD with live and studio tracks. Cobham and Asere will be touring the U.K. this fall.
"It's very, very interesting for me to hear this music and to play music like Mahavishnu Orchestra or even with Jack Bruce, but my approach is fundamentally the same," the drummer observes. "It's got a Latin root, and it kind of sets me off from everybody else.
"Music will tell the world who you are, based on what you present and how you present it. You can't lie through this medium.
"Therefore I find myself trying again to connect the dots, to learn. Through this relationship with Asere and the music we make together, it's helping me to connect. I'm reconnecting with my roots in Panama in order to see my future better through this clearer view of my past."
And as with any artistic endeavor, the personal becomes the universal, and Billy Cobham's most recent musical journey-back to his beginnings-will be shared and savored by his listeners around the world.

Joe Granda

Since 1967, Joe Granda has been part of the Miami Entertainment and Music Industry at the age of eight he was a child actor for WLTV (now Univision) in a variety children’s program, “Cabalgata Infantil”as a magician and ventriloquist, by the age of fifteen he formed the band “Majesty” as lead vocalist and signing to Jaguar records an indie label from Miami headed by Music Mogul’s Carlos Garcia (President Miami Tape) Tony Moreno, ( President/CEO Musical Productions, one of the largest indie Latin label in the world). He considers Mr. Garcia and Mr. Moreno the fathers of his music career, and Mr. Garcia’s sons Carlos Jr. and Jorge Garcia his brothers.
This self-titled debut, MAJESTY which marked Joe’s first original compositions, went off to become one of the hottest selling indie records in Miami and the band one of the hottest live bands and shows during the 70’s “Open House” Era. This recording marked the beginning of the Miami crossover sound, by having songs recorded in both English and Spanish Language.
After heavy touring and live appearances the group disbanded and Joe Granda continued his intense education process, Joe had already won several awards at his Junior High School, in Drama, Audio Visual and the Florida State’s oratorical contest, and after his High school graduation from Miami Lakes Sr. High, he continued his studies at Miami Dade Community College creating his own entertainment bachelors' degree including studies in Business Education and Law, Music Theory, Drama and Art.
During his college years, Joe began working very closely as a booking agent, when he received request for his now defunct band and with Tony Parodi (one of the most respected event producers) where he learned firsthand the in and out’s of concert production, event planning and promotion and shortly thereafter began to book bands and promote his own club events, during the disco and break dance era, making him one of the most successful Club & Event Promoters in South Florida. Joe packed clubs like “Alegro” in the Omni, Video Power House in Coral Gables and Illusions in Hialeah and brought the hottest bands and artist of the 70”s and 80”s, including France Joli, Gloria Gaynor, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Evelyn Thomas, Carol Jiani, Dead or Alive, Planet Patrol, Sly & The Family Stone, KC & The Sunshine Band, The next move was to begin working with the top motion Picture agents in Miami, booking talent for Major TV and Motion pictures productions and TV commercials such as “Miami Vice” ( which he also appeared in bit roles) & The Michael Mann directed “Cry of The City” and commercials for JC Penney, Pepsi, Nike, Pony and many more, this lead him back into recording and production when one of his groups were chosen to take a lead role in the Motion picture “Cry of The City” with Sammy Davis Jr., he took the opportunity and produced the title track to the motion picture entitled “Rockin' It”, which became a top #10 record on R&B Radio in New York City and the East Coast and prompted the group “MC Flex &The FBI Crew” to a national tour.
From there in 1985, Joe prepared three of the members of The FBI Crew and created a group called Nice & Wild, he then wrote and produced their first single “Diamond Girl”, he went back to his old pal Tony Moreno and together they released it under the TH Records label. The song became an instant national hit and was picked up with an album deal for the group by Atlantic Records. Joe, once again became the forefront of a new musical movement original called Latin Hip-Hop, now known as “Freestyle”, as the father of this new Miami sound Joe, toured intensively with the group, and had the opportunity to work with freestyle legends like: Secret Society, TKA, India, John “Jellybean” Benitez, Information Society, Noel, Debbie Deb, Trinere, Noel, Expose, Sweet Sensation, Cover Girls and many more and created chart history with Billboard Magazine, as songs Like Diamond Girl, prompted Billboard to create a “Crossover” chart. The song became one of the first songs in chart history to play on Pop and R&B radio with a full verse in Spanish, and Latin Radio with English Lyrics. The Nice& Wild album also prompted another hit song written and Produced by him entitled “Oh Baby”. Joe Granda created his own independent label “Angel Eyes Records” dedicated to the underground and new forming sounds in the industry, and has successfully charted various singles in the top10 Billboard Dance Chart, from its large catalog of music, including Club Anthems “Tubale (Extasy) “ by Warning, “Mas Suave” & “Ritmo Cubano, Sabor Africano” by Dogma & The Afro-Cuban Rhythms, Chango (In-legue) by LatinXpress and many more.
In 1994, Oscar Llord, (former Chairman of Sony Discos) proposed a deal to Granda, to create a merge with his Extreme Company, which prompted A&E Records. Within several months the label had prepared and signed several acts and right before the company began to release product, Oscar Llord, then GM of Rodven Records, formed Right Touch Productions, after the sale of Rodven to PolyGram. There, Joe was instrumental in creating the crossover phenomenon, using his street savvy and strong promotional and marketing skills. This company became one of the leaders in sales within an eight month period and was immediately purchased by its distributor Sony Discos who brought Oscar over to run the Sony Discos Label. There Oscar implemented Joe’s "crossover" ideas to break artist such as Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan, Shakira, Elvis Crespo, Son by Four and many more, into the mainstream Anglo market.
Joe Granda remained as an independent with independent ideas, since he always felt the majors would take away the strong independent mentally and hinder his street mentality. Since then Joe created The Granda Group of Companies, as an umbrella of his multi companies and services and has been instrumental in the behind the scenes of most major Latin and Crossover Artists. He prides his victories on his great team. His accounts include Sony-BMG, Universal Music Latino, Universal Records, Maverick Latin, EMI Latin, MP Records, Colombia Records, Crescent Moon Records, Estefan Enterprises, DreamWorks and many more. His references are like a who’s who of the music industry and can be provided upon your request.
In the past ten years Joe has become one of the major players of the Entertainment Industry, through his savvy Marketing and Promoting strategies, Publicity and Event Production, working closely with major Latin Talent, like Thalia, Juanes, Ricky Martin, Gloria Trevi, Gloria Estefan, La India, Paulina Rubio, David Bisbal, Luis Fonsi, Alejandra Guzman, Emmanuel, Celia Cruz and many more.. His event production intuition helped to create one of the most successful events in SeaWorld, Orlando History “Viva La Musica” which now has extended to Busch Gardens, Tampa, and will extend to all the Anheuser Busch parks in 09, nationwide giving Latin Artist the opportunity for more National Exposure, and has worked with acts like: Gilberto Santa Rosa, Victor Manuelle, El Gran Combo, Grupomania, Oscar D’leon, Grupo Niche, Angel Lopez, Tito El Bambino, Ivy Queen, Don Omar, Zion & Lennox, Andy Andy, Willie Colon, Jennifer Pena, Melina Leon, Tito Rojas, Tito Nieves, Ednita Nazario, Manny Manuelle, Aventura, Milly Quesada and many more.
Community service has also been part of Joe Granda’s agenda as he has volunteered his production services for many charitable events nationwide. Specifically, Joe has worked tirelessly for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Community, bringing Major Latin Artist that support the GLBT community to National Gay Club Tours, which brings positive images in the press and media of the GLBT struggle. Joe has also co-produced with Club-Papi Productions hugely successful Gay Pride events in Long Beach, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego. He also works tirelessly with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) (which is dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of people and events in the media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation) and assists in the selection of the artists who are to receive the "Valentia" award from GLADD, in their yearly award show in Miami. The artist is awarded for their hard work in presenting positive images of the GLBT community in the press and media. Joe also donates his time in helping the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Science (LARAS) produce last years’ Latin Grammy after party in New York City.
Granda’s future projects are still in the secret vault, but many new, fresh and innovative idea’s will continue to flow from this living legend, so expect many more years of great projects, great events, great music and great Entertainment.

You’re officially here because Diddy is calling you.’ It was a big moment.”
Big moments continue for Rico Love; singles with Beyonce (“Sweet Dreams”), Natasha Bedingfield (“Love Like This”), Keri Hilson (“Energy”), Pleasure P (“Boyfriend #2), and the latest from Mario (“Thinking About You,”) soon followed. These singles, in addition to three more cuts on I Am Sasha Fierce (“Radio,” “Scared Of Lonely,” and “Save The Hero), four on Mario’s upcoming album D.N.A. (“Soundtrack to My Broken Heart,” “Hi,” “Ooh Baby,” and “Get Out”), along with five on Usher’s soon to be released album, and it is clear Rico’s talent cannot go unnoticed.
Rico Love (born Richard Butler, Jr.) spent his childhood being shuttled between his mother’s house in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and his father’s home in Harlem, New York. “Growing up in those two separate places gave me a view of music from two totally different worlds,” he says.
With a little encouragement from his mother Rico began to pen poems as a kid and eventually he joined Milwaukee’s African American Children’s Theater. There he performed in plays like A Raisin in the Sun, recited the poetry of Langston Hughes and fell in love with idea of being an entertainer.
Traveling with the theater group also exposed young Rico to a wide range of musical influences. He listened to Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson as well as Elton John, Billy Joel and his favorite band, Queen. “As a kid I knew every Queen song. Even my parents just kind of thought I was a weirdo because of those kinds of things.”
When Rico was in his early teens a neighborhood friend introduced him to rap music and the young poet discovered he had a natural knack for rhyming. “I started writing raps and I got better at it,” he says. “I knew I wasn’t a regular kid. It came so natural for me.”
By the end of high school Rico was confident that he would ultimately make it as a rapper, but he decided to enroll in college “in the meantime.” “I said, ‘I’m [going] to go to school instead of just sitting on the block.’ If I hadn’t gone to college I would’ve been a drug dealer.”
Love packed his bags and headed south to Florida A&M University where he studied journalism but spent most of his time winning rap battles and talent shows around campus. Each weekend instead of partying with friends, Rico made a seven and a half hour pilgrimage by bus from Tallahassee to Atlanta, Georgia’s burgeoning music scene.
As he made his way through Atlanta’s studios Love linked up with Kyle Norman of Jagged Edge. Though he was still rapping at the time, Rico realizes that the period he spent with Norman’s R&B group members was critical in his development as a songwriter. “I used to be with them all the time and that’s where I learned how to write songs, watching those guys. I realized that you pick up [and] absorb things.”
Two and a half years into his college career a mix-up in the financial aid office caused Rico to leave Florida A&M and move to Atlanta to pursue music full time. While couch crashing with a set of producers named the Corna Boyz, Rico was given the opportunity to rap on an Usher remix they were crafting at the time.
That verse caught the ear of the R&B superstar and soon after Usher signed the young rapper to a deal with US Records/J Records. Usher then tossed Rico a beat from super producer Just Blaze and asked him to write something for his upcoming Confessions album. Miraculously, the resulting song titled “Throwback” made the final track listing. “That was the first song I ever wrote. I don’t know how it happened,” Rico admits. “I never wrote a song before. I just sort of came out naturally,”
As he toured the world with Usher, Rico was able to make a slew of valuable connections with A&R’s and major players throughout the music industry and calls for his melodic yet smart lyrics keep coming in. “After that I worked with Chris Brown. I worked with Omarion. Then, I wrote a song for Marques Houston called ‘All Because of You.’ It was the lead single for his album, Naked.”
Rico’s aspirations are way bigger than simply songwriting. He recently stepped up to the microphone to rap a verse on Fat Joe’s single “Aloha” and he plans to continue to familiarize the world with his brand just like his idol Sean “Diddy” Combs. "I want to position myself to be a mogul,” he says. “I just want to be what people think of when they think of music, when they think of fashion, just everything that has to do with entertainment.”
